The Shed Sound Laboratory is an independently owned & operated recording studio situated in the picturesque northern suburbs of the Illawarra (Dharawal Country). ‘The Shed’ as it is colloquially known, is a retrofitted old shed in the idyllic setting of native bushland and equine paddocks.
Owner & operator, Jez Player began his self-taught practice of recording and production over a decade ago, with his band The Pinheads. Jez began to utilise unconventional and ‘lo-fi’ equipment and practices with the intention of capturing a certain energy and attitude that he felt was missing in music at the time.
After 10 years of refining his craft, Jez has become a stalwart figure for those wishing to capture raw, vintage inspired and/or live sounds. Brought to life by his extensive collection of vintage and boutique equipment and unique recording practice.
The space is equipped with but not limited to, a vintage multi-track reel to reel recorder, a 70’s mixing console, a selection of vintage and boutique microphones and outboard equipment as well as a wide variety of vintage instruments and amplifiers such as; Rhodes & Wurlitzer electric pianos, a Hammond Tonewheel organ and a who’s who of 60’s and 70’s tube amplifiers.
Jez has also spent many years working in the Social Work sector, which he integrates in his approach to working with others. This includes practicing a person-centred approach, promoting a safe and inclusive space, and ultimately, being a friendly and empathetic collaborator.
We would like to acknowledge that we work on Dharawal country. We pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and elders past, present and emerging.
